The Escorial and surrounding areas of Madrid deserve more than just a day trip. This week-long guided tour will show you the both the magnificent sights, and the off-the-beaten-path secrets the region has to offer. It’s a scenic, picturesque journey along country lanes and ancient Roman roads. Along the way you’ll enjoy delicious local cuisine, stop off at palaces, castles, and aqueducts. At every stop, our guides will regale you with stories from Spain’s rich history. The tour ends in Madrid with a weekend of tapas and nightlife. For the brave, or perhaps foolhardy, there will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn how to dance flamenco. Olé!
Pick up at Madrid airport at a pre-arranged time and transfer by minibus to your hotel. Welcome party to all participants, handing-over of all documents and selection of bicycles. Possibility of a stroll to get acquainted with the town and admire the monastery.
After a nice breakfast there will be a briefing about the day´s events. We will start with an easy tour to get acquainted and enjoy the surroundings of El Escorial with its royal parks, sites, forests and hills. Later on we will bike to the nearby dam. We´ll be following paths bordered by pine trees, evergreen oaks and small streams. We will return early in the afternoon to the hotel.
Quiet excursion on routes with some more difficulties. Visit to the nearby gardens and parks, climbing smoothly to “Philip II´s chair” (carved out in a rock and on which the king sat to contemplate the progress of works while the monastery was being built), a point where we have a wonderful view on the monastery. There, we will have a soft drink and admire the site visited by many famous persons. We´ll be riding on a roman roadway that led from Mérida (Extremadura) to Segovia, and beautiful paths to the pleasant village of Zarzalejo. After a break we continue on very old sheep lanes (going back 5 centuries) until we arrive at Robledo de Chavela where our minibus is ready, waiting for us. On our way back to El Escorial, there will be plenty of time to visit the theatre or have a relaxing walk in the garden of the monastery.
Excursion to Segovia where, en route, we will ride our bicycles in the grounds of the Palace of Riofrio. We will get to see some deer as we go by the Palace de la Granja, visiting these fabulous gardens and superb fountains. Arrival at Segovia to visit its monuments. We will have lunch just in front of the Roman aqueduct. In the afternoon we will have a rest at Plaza Mayor, have a refreshing drink and get the chance to write a few postal cards. Return to El Escorial in our mini bus to have supper.
After breakfast we will bike along a few fields in the outskirts of El Escorial where brave bulls graze. We will cycle to the Valley of the Fallen (colossal Monument to the fallen in the Spanish Civil War dug in the rock) and on the way back we may visit the dam of “La Jarosa “. Return to the hotel, later on transfer by minibus to Madrid. Afternoon and evening are free, but we suggest we all have supper together and we go to a Flamenco show. This is an optional choice.
Free day. We shall be giving information and tips on things and places, but each of you will be free to go wherever you please since the choice is so large. Not to be missed: The Royal Palace, Plaza Mayor main central square and some museums. Optional: Madrid city tour by bicycle, a wonderful experience.
If you have the time, we suggest you go to the Retiro (lovely and lively park) or to “el rastro “, an open air flea market.
