Detailed Tour Route
The route crosses two of Spain’s most iconic wine regions, La Rioja and Ribera del Duero, combining vineyard landscapes, medieval villages, river valleys, and historic towns. From the rolling vineyards of La Rioja to the open countryside of Castilla y León, the journey offers a constant variety of scenery, culture, and heritage, including visits to some of the most iconic wineries in Spain and centuries-old winemaking traditions.

The cuisine in La Rioja is rooted in exceptional home-grown produce and deeply traditional flavours. From seasonal vegetables and hearty stews to premium meats, river fish, and iconic local specialities such as Rioja chorizo and morcilla, the region offers a rich and authentic gastronomic identity. After a day of cycling, each stop becomes an opportunity to discover the simplicity and excellence of northern Spain’s culinary heritage.

You will be welcomed at the airport in Madrid on arrival, alternatively we will collect you from your hotel on the morning of day 1. A comfortable ride in our minibus takes us to Burgos, just 4 hours away. Dating back to 884, Burgos rises from the banks of the River Arlanzón and offers stunning examples of Spain’s gothic architecture. We’ll have a good lunch on arrival in Burgos, followed by a tour around the city, including a visit to the cathedral. Departing from Burgos, we drive on to Haro (the so called capital of wine) where many of the wineries are concentrated. Upon arrival, we’ll celebrate with a welcoming drink and handing out the tour documents to prepare for the week’s adventure. Later there’s time for a stroll around the town. Dinner tonight is at the hotel.

Each morning you can count on a hearty breakfast to prepare you for the day’s activity. Following a buffet breakfast, we head off in the minibus to the village of El Ciego where we stop for our first wine visit to the relatively modern (inaugurated in 2006) Marqués de Riscal winery, designed by celebrated architect Frank Gehry. We start our day’s cycling at El Ciego, heading for Laguardia, home to many bodegas and a charmingly picturesque town of walls and ramparts, located on the foothills of the Sierra de Cantabria mountains. From Laguardia we cycle back to Haro through countryside abundant with vineyards and along the banks of the river Duero, pausing at delightful villages such as the village of Navarides, Baños de Ebro, San Vicente de Sonsierra, a pretty village overlooked by a castle where we stop for lunch, continuing in the afternoon via La Bastida, with a fortress, to finish the day’s cycling at Haro.
50 km / 31 miles | 277 m (909 ft) Today our day’s activity starts with a visit to one of Haro’s wineries: either Heredia, Muga or Manzanos. Then we start out cycling southwards along the banks of the river Tiron with Ezcaray the day’s final destination, stopping for lunch at Casalareina, so called as this was briefly the home of Queen Juana La Loca (The Mad). Our afternoon’s ride includes a stop at Santo Domingo de la Calzada, which is an important stop along the Camino de Santiago Pilgrim’s trail. We visit the cathedral and hear the curious legend about a young pilgrim and a resuscitated roast chicken !From Santo Domingo de La Calzada we cycle the last 15 miles along the River Oja to reach our charming mountain hotel at the ski resort of Ezcaray. Dinner here is at your expense.
65 km / 41 miles plus transit in minibus.| 390 m (1280 ft)
The town of Ezcaray is well known for its production of woollen products. Our today’s cycling starts with a 10 km ride, climbing (no problem for E-bikers!) to the mountain pass of Puerto de Pradilla, where there are some fine views to be enjoyed including Monte San Lorenzo, part of the Sierra de la Demanda.
We continue with a downhill ride to Pradoluengo and then some climbs to Pineda de la Sierra, where we stop for lunch.
Here as we are moving quite a distance between La Rioja and Ribera del Duero, the final part of the route will be done in our minibus, with driving time estimated at 1 1/2 hours.
Covarrubias is a picturesque and well preserved medieval town with an interesting history — our hotel is a family run enterprise.
55 km / 34 miles | 159 m (522 ft)
This morning we set off in the direction of Monasterio de Santo Domingo de Silos to visit its unique monastery, famous for its Gregorian chants sung superbly by monks.
Feeling quite relaxed we can continue on to Desfiladero de Yecla, a natural wonder, and Caleruega, charming pueblo.
Next we’ll bicycle to Peñaranda de Duero and stop at the Posada (Inn), overlooking the main square and castle of the town. The inn is very pleasant and comfortable, you’ll feel right at home, and they’ve also got great food.
A small, peaceful village, we’ll explore a bit or just hang out before dinner.
Before we leave this morning, we can take some time to visit a palace belonging to the Zúñiga and Avellaneda families. Peñaranda is also home to one of the oldest pharmacies in Spain, having been in the same family for eight generations!
We’ll make a quick trip and then hop in the minibus to go to La Vid for a tour of one of the oldest wineries in the region.
70 km / 43 miles | mostly flat
Cycling along the meadows on the banks of the River Duero, our route takes us through beautiful and abundant vineyards past charming villages like Pesquera. We’ll have lunch and in Tudela board the minibus for the last stage of the trip to Valladolid, the capital city of Castile and León. There are many museums and churches, with just 320,000 inhabitants it has a bustling city feel with lots of bars and restaurants, too. We’ll have a rest and enjoy free time for shopping or visiting the many sights of the city. Dinner is at a lovely, traditional restaurant in the city center.
We leave early today, as there’s still much to see! The journey in the minibus is about 3 hours, but we’ll stop for lunch along the way and there’s a possibility of including a visit to the city of Segovia, too. Segovia is a city rich in history nestled in the lush mountains north of Madrid, dating back to Celtiberian times with an authentic Roman aqueduct and many other monuments and things to explore. Once we’ve filled our lungs with the precious fresh pine-scented air, we’ll head back to Madrid. Back in Madrid, your last evening is free to celebrate your accomplishment however you choose – we’ve got some great recommendations and can help you make reservations in a restaurant worthy of the occasion.
Congratulations on your week’s feat, well done!
