Discover the Spa Triangle of Western Bohemia by Bike
The Spa Triangle offers a distinctive way to discover Western Bohemia, combining historic spa towns with forests, river valleys and a rich cultural heritage. Starting with a transfer from Prague, the journey takes you into a region shaped by centuries of spa tradition, historic mining and the landscapes of the Slavkov Forest and the Ohře River valley. Medieval towns, castles, chateaux and religious monuments add cultural depth to the cycling experience.
A Flexible Self-Guided Cycling Holiday from Prague
This self-guided journey combines cycling with the freedom to explore Western Bohemia independently, following prepared routes through the Spa Triangle and its surrounding landscapes. GPS tracks, route information and luggage transfer make the journey easy to follow, while two-night stays in the spa towns leave time to enjoy the destination beyond the bike.

ROUTE
The route crosses Western Bohemia from the spa landscapes around Karlovy Vary to Františkovy Lázně and Mariánské Lázně, combining river valleys, wooded countryside and historic towns. Along the way, the cycling experience includes the Ohře River valley and Slavkov Forest, the medieval castle town of Loket, the historic centre of Cheb and the chateau landscapes around Kynžvart and Bečov nad Teplou. The route also touches the region’s mining heritage and places connected with its long history as a borderland.
Self Guided experience
The self-guided format gives you the freedom to enjoy the route at your own pace, with prepared routes, GPX tracks and online/offline maps to support navigation. Luggage is transferred between accommodations, while the two-night stays in the spa towns allow for more flexibility during the journey, including shorter cycling options or time to explore without the bike.
Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Karlovy Vary
Arrive in Karlovy Vary and settle into the first spa town of the journey. Founded by Charles IV, the town is known for its healing springs, historic architecture and elegant spa setting. Take time to explore the town before the cycling begins and enjoy the atmosphere of one of the Czech Republic’s most important spa destinations.
Day 2: Karlovy Vary – Karlovy Vary
30–70 km / 19–44 miles
An optional train ride takes you towards the Ore Mountains, where the region’s mining heritage forms part of a UNESCO World Heritage site. From here, the route leads back towards Karlovy Vary, passing the Mauritius silver mine, Jáchymov and Ostrov. Jáchymov combines its history as a silver-mining town with its spa tradition, while Ostrov is known for its chateau, French-style park and Socialist Realist architecture. You can choose between the longer cycling route or a shorter option, leaving time to return to Karlovy Vary and enjoy another evening in the spa town.
Day 3: Karlovy Vary – Františkovy Lázně
62 km / 38 miles
Leave Karlovy Vary behind and follow the Ohře River valley through the Slavkov Forest. The route passes the Svatošské Skály rock formations before reaching Loket, where the medieval castle dominates the historic town. Continue towards Sokolov, with its chateau and historic centre, before arriving in Františkovy Lázně. Founded as a spa town in the 19th century under Emperor Franz I, it provides a distinctive setting for the next stage of the journey.
Day 4: Františkovy Lázně – Františkovy Lázně
15–60 km / 10–37 miles
A flexible cycling day around Františkovy Lázně gives you the choice between spending more time in the spa town or taking one of the recommended cycling loops. The surrounding countryside reveals the area’s history as a border region, with castles, fortresses and chateaux along the routes. An optional ride can also take you towards the German border and Hohenberg Castle, adding a different perspective to the landscape around Františkovy Lázně.
Day 5: Františkovy Lázně – Mariánské Lázně
50 km / 31 miles
Cycle towards Cheb, one of the historic towns of Western Bohemia, and explore its historic centre, the Špalíček merchant houses and imperial castle. From here, the route continues along car-free roads through smaller villages, passing the Marian Loretto pilgrimage church and the chateau in Starý Hroznatov. The journey then reaches Kynžvart chateau before continuing to Mariánské Lázně, the second major spa destination of the tour.
Day 6: Mariánské Lázně – Bečov nad Teplou – Mariánské Lázně
55 km / 34 miles
Leave Mariánské Lázně for a final cycling journey through the forests and meadows of the Slavkov Forest. The route first reaches Teplá monastery, founded in the 12th century, with its monastery church and historic library. Continue to Bečov nad Teplou and its chateau, where the famous St. Maura reliquary was hidden. From Bečov, you can either return to Mariánské Lázně by train or continue cycling the remaining distance, finishing the final full day back in the spa town.
Day 7: Mariánské Lázně – End of trip
Breakfast and departure from Mariánské Lázně. After six nights and five cycling days across Western Bohemia, the journey through the Czech Spa Triangle comes to an end. A transfer to Prague can be arranged from the final destination.
