From Alpine Lakes to Wine Yards and the Adriatic Coast
Cycle through the changing landscapes of Slovenia on a self-guided journey that begins around the alpine setting of Lake Bled and continues towards the Adriatic coast. The tour brings together some of the country’s most distinctive settings, from Lake Bohinj and the Soča Valley to the wine-growing landscapes of Brda and the limestone Karst, before crossing into Italy and finishing in Muggia. Along the way, Slovenia’s natural scenery, historic towns and cultural heritage create a varied backdrop for a cycling holiday that combines mountains, vineyards and the coast.
A Self-Guided Bike Tour with Freedom to Explore
The self-guided format gives you the independence to experience Slovenia at your own pace, following prepared routes with navigation support while your luggage is transferred between accommodations. A welcome meeting and bike handover at the start, digital travel information, and backup support during the tour provide practical assistance while leaving you free to decide how you spend your time on the road.

ROUTE
The route takes you from the alpine landscapes around Lake Bled and Lake Bohinj into the Soča Valley, through the vineyards of Brda and across the Karst before reaching the Adriatic coast. Highlights along the way include the Škocjan Caves and the Slovenian-Italian border area, with the tour finishing in Muggia, Italy. The route is mainly paved and follows mostly regional country roads, with some cycleways and a small section of main roads.
As a self-guided tour, you follow prepared routes with GPS navigation while your luggage is transferred between accommodations. This gives you the freedom to cycle at your own pace and spend time exploring each area along the way.
Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Bled
Arrive in Bled the famous lakeside town with its island church and clifftop castle. Settle into your accommodation. The tour begins with a welcome meeting and bike handover, giving you time to prepare for the cycling days ahead.
Day 2: Bled – Bohinjska Bistrica
47 km / 29 mi · 580 m / 2,165 ft elevation gain
One of the loveliest rides of the trip: out through Bohinjska Bela, then up the emerald Sava Bohinjka into the Bohinj Valley.
Continue to shimmering Lake Bohinj — the jewel of Triglav National Park — and loop back through the upper valley.
Day 3: Bohinjska Bistrica – Tolmin
55 km / 34 mi · 630 m / 3346 ft elevation gain
Leave Bohinjska Bistrica and continue towards Tolmin through the Julian Alps. The route leads into the Soča Valley and includes a more demanding amount of climbing.
Day 4: Tolmin – Šmartno – Solkan
46 km / 28.5 mi · 720 m / 2,362 ft elevation gain
A morning transfer lifts you to the Kolovrat ridge, a WW1 open-air museum high above the Soča Valley. Ride the ridges into the
Brda wine hills, through medieval Šmartno, and down a unique corridor cycle path past the world’s largest stone-arch bridge.
Day 5: Solkan – Karst area
42 km / 26 mi · 680 m / 1800 ft elevation gain
Through Gorizia — once split by the Iron Curtain — along the old border past the smallest military museum in the world, then into
the Karst vineyards for a tasting in a stone village.
Day 6: Karst – Divača
50 km / 31 mi · 610 m / 2000 ft elevation gain
Cycle across the Karst towards Divača. The shorter stage allows time to explore the area, including the Škocjan Caves, one of the key natural highlights of the tour.
Day 7: Divača – Muggia
40 km / 24.9 mi · 280 m / 918 ft elevation gain
Optionally visit the UNESCO-listed Škocjan Caves, then ride down to Muggia, a little Venetian port south of Trieste. Take a boat
across the bay or relax on the beach.
Day 8: Departure from Muggia
The tour ends in Muggia after breakfast. From here, continue with your onward travel arrangements.
Extend Your Stay
Additional nights with bed and breakfast can be organized on request.
