From Alpine Valleys to Vineyards and Lake Geneva

Follow the Rhône River through a changing Swiss landscape, from the mountain scenery of Goms and the Valais to the vineyards around Lake Geneva. Along the way, the route connects historic towns, Alpine landscapes, wine-growing areas and cultural highlights, creating a varied cycling journey through some of the most distinctive regions of western Switzerland.

A Flexible Way to Discover Switzerland by Bike

This self-guided bike tour combines daily cycling stages with the freedom to explore Switzerland at your own pace. The route is prepared for you, while luggage transfer, digital travel documents, GPS data and a service hotline make it easy to focus on cycling and discovering the towns, vineyards and landscapes along the Rhône.

ROUTE

The route follows the Rhône through the Swiss Alps and the Valais, gradually moving from the high Alpine valley of Goms towards the vineyards and lower landscapes of western Switzerland. Cycling through Brig, the wine-growing areas around Sierre and Sion and onwards to Martigny, the scenery continues to evolve before reaching the shores of Lake Geneva. The final stages include the UNESCO-listed Lavaux vineyard landscape, Lausanne, Morges, Rolle and Nyon before the journey ends in Geneva.

The self-guided format lets you discover this changing landscape independently. Along the way, the experience also includes a wine tasting in Varen, adding a local dimension to the cycling route through the Valais.

Itinerary

50 km | 275 m ascent | 970 m descent

After arriving in Oberwald and dropping off your luggage, start cycling through the sunny high valley of Goms. Here, the Rhône is still known as the Rotten, and the route gradually descends towards Brig. In the evening, there is time to visit the World Nature Forum in nearby Naters, which presents the UNESCO World Heritage region of Jungfrau-Aletsch.

44 km | 280 m ascent | 415 m descent

From Brig, the Rhône valley becomes wider as the route continues through the Valais. Between Leuk and Sierre, you pass the Pfynwald nature reserve, a distinctive natural area formed on a large mound of glacial deposits. The area also marks the boundary between the German- and French-speaking parts of Valais.

47 km | 15 m ascent | 80 m descent

The route continues towards Sion, the capital of Valais, where historic castles, churches and mansions shape the cityscape. Further along, the lower Rhône valley opens towards the high Alpine peaks of the Dents du Midi, with vineyards and fertile fruit orchards accompanying the ride towards Martigny.

56 km | 115 m ascent | 200 m descent

Leave Martigny, located at the narrowest point of the Rhône valley, and continue towards Lake Geneva. The route passes St-Maurice before reaching the lakeshore, where the landscape changes from Alpine mountains to the waters of Lake Geneva. Chillon Castle, standing on the water, is one of the day’s main landmarks.

65 km | 690 m ascent | 670 m descent

Cycle along the shores of Lake Geneva with vineyards and Alpine peaks surrounding the lake. The route passes Vevey, Montreux and Lausanne before continuing through the terraced vineyards of Lavaux, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Further west, the La Côte wine-growing region leads through the lakeside towns of Morges and Rolle towards the castles of Nyon and Prangins.

26 km | 140 m ascent | 160 m descent

The final stage follows the La Côte vineyards and the northern shore of Lake Geneva. After passing the lakeside towns of Morges, Rolle and Nyon, the route continues towards Geneva, where the city’s boulevards and the 140-metre-high Jet d’eau mark the end of the cycling journey.
