Cycle Through Italy’s Epicurean Heart: Barolo Vineyards, Historic Cellars & Truffle Country

Piedmont is a paradise for gourmets, offering world-famous wines, white truffles, fine chocolate, and rich regional cuisine set against dramatic alpine backdrops. Starting and ending in Turin—Italy’s first capital, known for its French flair—this eight-day cycling loop guides you through rolling vineyards, historic orchards, and medieval towns. Discover the perfect blend of architectural grandeur, epicurean indulgence, and scenic variety with every turn of the wheel.

Cycling Through Epicurean & Cultural Treasures

Ride along peaceful riverways, quiet country lanes, and bike paths that lead to iconic historical sights. Explore the Rococo Palace of Stupinigi, the medieval streets of Saluzzo, and Roman archaeological sites in Benevagienna and Pollenzo. Take in sweeping views of snow-capped mountains as you pedal through legendary wine towns like Barolo and Asti, or sample world-renowned white truffles in Alba and artisanal delicacies in Bra, the birthplace of the Slow Food movement.

ROUTE

The route follows bike paths, secondary paths, and low-traffic side roads, though heavier traffic is encountered within city limits. While the initial stages along riverways are predominantly flat, the terrain transitions into hilly landscapes, featuring longer ascents between Bra, Barolo, and Alba. The cycling portion concludes with a train connection from Chieri back to Turin.

Itinerary

Arrive in Turin, Italy’s elegant first capital often called “Little Paris.” After your personal tour briefing and bike fitting, immerse yourself in a city lined with grand baroque boulevards, historic royal residences, and world-class museums framed by the breathtaking Alpine skyline.

31 miles / 50 km

Pedal along the gentle waters of the Po River on peaceful bike paths and rural side roads. Take time to marvel at the magnificent Rococo Palace of Stupinigi, the lavish former hunting residence of the Royal House of Savoy, before continuing through verdant parks and riverways toward Pinerolo, a historic town world-famous for its prestigious cavalry tradition.

28 miles / 45 km

Cycle along scenic, sun-drenched paths winding past vibrant fruit orchards and emerald vineyards. Cross the flat plains toward Cavour, where the dramatic “Rocca” fortress hill rises unexpectedly from the landscape, before finishing your stage in medieval Saluzzo, a charming town brimming with cobblestone alleys and aristocratic charm.

40 miles / 65 km

Glide past the majestic aristocratic estates of Manta and Costigliole as you journey deeper into Piedmont’s rich cultural heartland. Explore the ancient Roman ruins and archaeological excavations in Benevagienna, then ride through historic Cherasco to reach Bra—the world capital of epicurean culture and the proud birthplace of the global Slow Food movement.

31 miles / 50 km

Begin at historic Pollenzo, home to the University of Gastronomic Sciences, before conquering the vineyard-draped hills leading into legendary Barolo. Reward your efforts with a tasting of Italy’s grandest red wine while soaking in panoramic valley views, then follow the winding Tanaro River to Alba, the undisputed culinary capital renowned for its prized white truffles.

25 miles / 40 km

Cycle through the picturesque, rolling landscapes of the Roero wine region. Admire the striking hilltop castles of Guarene and Cisterna along your route before arriving in culture-rich Asti, a lively town world-famous for its exquisite sparkling wine and its fiercely competitive medieval Palio horse race.

28 miles / 45 km + train ride
