You’ll ride through fragrant coastal pine forests to the Baltic resort of Palanga, cross countryside meadows inhabited by white storks, and explore the peaceful wetlands of Rusnė Island in the Nemunas Delta. The journey culminates on the UNESCO-listed Curonian Spit—reached via a scenic lagoon boat crossing—where you’ll cycle past massive moving sand dunes, rare bird colonies, and traditional wooden fishing villages.
Distance & Terrain: Approx. 250 km total. Exceptionally flat and easy-going throughout, with only gentle, short inclines among the coastal dunes.
Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Klaipėda
Arrive in Klaipėda and make your own way to the hotel (transfer not included). After check-in, enjoy some free time to explore this historic port city at your leisure.
Day 2: Klaipėda – Palanga – Klaipėda
~58 km / 36 miles
After the tour briefing, set off along the Lithuanian Seaside Cycle Route towards the popular resort of Palanga. The route passes through Giruliai Forest and the Seaside Regional Park, once used as a Soviet military training area. Along the way, you can visit the Dutchman’s Cap, a 24-metre-high coastal cliff, and Plazė Lake. In Palanga, explore the Botanical Park, the Amber Museum, J. Basanavičius pedestrian street with its cafés and restaurants, and the 470-metre pier stretching into the Baltic Sea. Return to Klaipėda following the same or a slightly different route.
Day 3: Klaipėda – Šilutė
~47 km / 29 miles + ~40 km / 25 miles by minibus
A short minibus transfer takes you inland, where today’s cycling begins. Ride along peaceful country roads towards Šilutė, a region known for having one of the largest populations of white storks in Europe, Lithuania’s national bird. En route, stop in the village of Švėkšna to visit its historic estate, beautiful park and impressive neo-Gothic Church of St. Jacob the Apostle.
Day 4: Šilutė – Rusnė Island – Šilutė
~44 km / 28 miles
Today’s circular ride explores Rusnė Island, the only island in Lithuania, located within the Nemunas River Delta Regional Park. Visit Rusnė village and see the monument dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi and his close friend Hermann Kallenbach. From the banks of the Nemunas River, you can see Russia’s Kaliningrad region just 100 metres away. Continue cycling around the island, enjoying its unspoilt nature, birdwatching towers and the 19th-century lighthouse at Uostadvaris Harbour.
Day 5: Šilutė – Nida
~33 km / 21 miles cycling + ~14 km / 9 miles by boat
Cycle to Ventė Cape, home to a museum of ornithology, one of Europe’s first bird-ringing stations and a 19th-century lighthouse overlooking the Curonian Lagoon and its impressive sand dunes. Every year, around one million birds migrate through this area. Afterwards, board a boat to cross the Curonian Lagoon to Nida before cycling to your hotel.
Day 6: Free Day in Nida
~10 km / 6 miles
Enjoy a free day to discover Nida at your own pace. This former fishing village lies on the Curonian Spit, between the Baltic Sea and the Curonian Lagoon, and is one of Lithuania’s most beautiful seaside resorts. Cycle or walk through the impressive sand dunes and visit highlights such as the Fisherman’s House, Thomas Mann’s summer residence and the Amber Gallery.
Day 7: Nida – Juodkrantė – Klaipėda
~57 km / 36 miles
Follow the Seaside Cycle Route along the Curonian Spit on a paved cycling path back to Klaipėda. Along the way, you can stop to explore the Dead Dunes, observe colonies of grey herons and cormorants, visit the Hill of Witches with its many wooden sculptures inspired by Lithuanian folklore, or simply relax on the sandy beaches of the Baltic Sea. At the end of the ride, take the local ferry from Smiltynė to Klaipėda’s Old Town before cycling to your hotel.
