Travel independently and enjoy the freedom to stop, explore and take in the Douro Valley at your own pace. Cycle through the vineyards without having to carry your luggage, thanks to the included luggage transfer, while GPS routes and prepared travel information make it easy to follow the journey.
ROUTE
The route takes you from Bragança through northeastern Portugal towards the Douro Valley and finally to Porto, passing Macedo de Cavaleiros, Vila Flor, Vila Nova de Foz Côa, Pinhão and Peso da Régua. The landscape evolves from olive and almond groves and historic villages to the vineyard-covered hills and terraces of the Douro.
Cycling is mainly on quiet country roads and low-traffic side roads, with some cycle paths along the way. The route is hilly, with several longer and steeper climbs, making it an athletic cycling tour for riders looking to explore Portugal’s Douro Valley and wine country by bike.
Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Bragança
Take time to explore Bragança’s charming old town, with its quaint squares, picturesque stream and medieval castle rising above the town. A relaxed introduction to northern Portugal before the cycling begins.
Day 2: Bragança – Macedo de Cavaleiros
61 km / 38 mi
Leave Bragança behind and cycle through gentle hills, almond trees and olive groves, passing quiet villages and traditional stone houses. After the final climb, enjoy a relaxing descent along a dedicated bike path into the authentic town of Macedo de Cavaleiros.
Day 3: Macedo de Cavaleiros – Vila Flor
64 km / 40 mi
Follow a gentle bike path into the countryside, where wide views open across olive groves and cork oak forests. After passing charming villages and enjoying the rural scenery, continue through increasingly rocky landscapes towards Vila Flor and its narrow streets and picturesque squares.
Day 4: Vila Flor – Vila Nova de Foz Côa
48 km / 30 mi
Descend from Vila Flor through vineyards and along ancient dry-stone walls towards the Sabor River. Follow the river past terraced vineyards before continuing towards Torre de Moncorvo and the panoramic road to Pocinho, with spectacular vineyard landscapes accompanying the final approach to Vila Nova de Foz Côa.
Day 5: Vila Nova de Foz Côa – Pinhão
62 km / 39 mi
Cycle gently uphill through vineyards, almond trees and olive groves before tackling two steeper climbs. From the panoramic viewpoints, the Douro River unfolds below its iconic wine terraces, followed by a delightful descent into Pinhão and its riverside promenade.
Day 6: Pinhão – Peso da Régua
58 km / 36 mi
Ride through the Douro’s sun-drenched wine terraces before descending back towards the river. The route then climbs above the Douro once more, following steep slopes covered with port wine vineyards before reaching Peso da Régua and its lively riverside setting.
Day 7: Peso da Régua – Porto by Boat
Leave the bike behind and experience the Douro from the water. As the boat travels towards Porto, vineyards, riverside villages, cherry trees and forests pass by, with impressive locks and narrow rock passages adding to the journey before the bridges and historic architecture of Porto come into view.
Day 8: Departure from Porto
Your cycling holiday comes to an end in Porto. Depart after breakfast or extend your stay to spend more time discovering the city.

By Plane: Porto Airport (OPO). From the airport, a direct express bus takes approximately 3.5 hours to Bragança.
