The route takes you from Bruges to the Belgian coast and back, combining historic towns, coastal landscapes and quiet countryside. Highlights include De Haan, Ostend, Oudenburg and Nieuwpoort, with cycling along the coast and through the rural landscapes around Bruges.

The easy, flat routes make it possible to explore the area at a relaxed pace, with plenty of variety between Bruges, the North Sea coast and the countryside of West Flanders. As a family cycling holiday, the itinerary offers a straightforward way to discover Belgium by bike while enjoying time together along the way.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Bruges

Arrive in Bruges and settle in before beginning your family cycling holiday. This historic city provides the perfect introduction to the journey, with its canals and medieval character setting the scene for the days ahead.

Day 2: Bruges – De Haan – Ostend

40 km / 25 miles

Leave Bruges and cycle towards the Belgian coast, with De Haan and Ostend as the main destinations of the day. The route combines the historic atmosphere of Bruges with the changing scenery of the coast, making this a varied first day of cycling for the family.

Day 3: Circular ride to Oudenburg

30 km / 19 miles

Today’s shorter circular route takes you from Ostend to Oudenburg and back, offering a relaxed way to continue discovering the area by bike. After yesterday’s ride along the coast, this stage provides another perspective on the landscapes around Ostend.

Day 4: Circular ride to Nieuwpoort

44 km / 27 miles

Cycle from Ostend towards Nieuwpoort on another circular route before returning to your accommodation. The day brings another part of the Belgian coast into your journey, giving the family more time to discover the seaside landscapes by bike.

Day 5: Ostend – Bruges

36 km / 22 miles

Leave Ostend and cycle back towards Bruges, gradually moving away from the coast and returning to the historic city. After exploring several coastal destinations, the contrast between the North Sea and Bruges adds another dimension to the family cycling experience.

Day 6: Circular ride to Blankenberge & North Sea

31 km / 19 miles

Enjoy another circular cycling day from Bruges, heading towards Blankenberge and the North Sea coast. The route gives the family another opportunity to experience the Belgian coast by bike before returning to Bruges for the evening.

Day 7: Departure from Bruges

After breakfast, your family cycling holiday comes to an end in Bruges. Depart from the city or continue your stay and enjoy more time discovering this historic Belgian destination.

Getting to Bruges (Departure Point)

By Plane: Brussels Airport (BRU) or Brussels South Charleroi Airport (CRL), then continue by train to Bruges.
By Train: Direct trains are available from Brussels to Bruges.
By Car: Bruges is easily accessible by road. Parking options should be checked in advance.

Parking: Free hotel parking is available in Bruges during your stay. Parking costs €3 per day on other days.

Bike rental is available for 5 days. Bikes are delivered in Brussels and collected in Bruges.

Bikes are equipped with: pannier, pump, lock, repair kit, odometer. All bikes have hand brakes and not included bike helmets.

Kids’ bike rental, a third wheel and a trailer are also available on request.

This tour is easy and flat, making it particularly suitable for families with children. The route follows quiet roads and cycle paths, with manageable stages and varied scenery between Bruges, the Belgian coast and the surrounding countryside.

You are welcome to bring your own bike, perfectly suited to your needs and preferences.

Please bring the necessary repair equipment, including tools, a spare tube and a bike lock, and make sure your bicycle is in good working condition before departure.
