ROUTE
Tracing the coastline from west to east, the route leads from the dramatic sea cliffs of Sagres through historic ports like Lagos and Portimão to the rolling countryside of Albufeira. Continuing past Faro, you pedal along the tranquil wetlands of the Ria Formosa Nature Park toward Tavira and the Guadiana border river. The terrain is gently hilly with short ascents, running mainly on cycle paths, agricultural tracks, and quiet side roads, with brief sections on busier roads or unpaved gravel.

Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Sagres
Sagres lies in the far southwest of Portugal, where the Atlantic meets impressive sea cliffs. Discover this windswept town with its historic fortress, rugged landscapes, wide beaches, and spectacular views. A particular highlight is Europe’s southwesternmost point, Cabo de São Vicente, famous for its lighthouse and breathtaking sunsets.
Day 2: Sagres – Lagos
43–51 km / 26–31 miles
The first cycle tour brings you to the famous lighthouse at Cape St. Vincent, Europe’s southwesternmost point. From cliffs reaching nearly 75 meters above the Atlantic, enjoy broad ocean views and the sound of crashing waves. Continue over gentle hills into the fishing village of Salema and onto the beach of Burgau. Before entering Lagos, pass the natural rock formations of Ponta da Piedade. Conclude the day in the lively harbor town of Lagos.
Day 3: Lagos – Portimão
34 km / 21 miles
Start the day along Meia Praia beach. In Odiáxere, visit the 16th-century church, and in Alvor, stroll through the narrow alleyways or the Morabito de São Pedro market. Continue cycling along the coast with sea views, pausing at Praia da Rocha beach before arriving in Portimão along the Arade estuary.
Day 4: Portimão – Albufeira
37 km / 23 miles
Follow the Arade River into Ferragudo, home to a historic church and estuary views. Ride past olive, cypress, orange, fig, and cork oak trees toward Lagoa, where you can visit the clifftop chapel of Senhora da Rocha. Pass broad sandy beaches on your way to the holiday resort of Albufeira.
Day 5: Albufeira – Faro
48 km / 30 miles
Pass the beach at the fishing village of Olhos de Água and the large marina at Vilamoura. Cycle through shaded pine forests to enter the Ria Formosa Nature Park. Continue toward Faro, where you can explore the historic old town, its alleyways, and local restaurants.
Day 6: Faro – Tavira
42 km / 26 miles
Ride along cycle paths through the Ria Formosa Nature Park with views of offshore barrier islands and salt lakes. Stop at the waterfront market in Olhão, proceed through the white-housed fishing village of Fuseta, and finish the stage crossing the historic Roman bridge in Tavira.
Day 7: Excursion to Vila Real de Santo António
61 km / 39 miles
Cycle alongside the lagoons of Ria Formosa, passing through the pine forests of Monte Gordo beach and the dune woods of Vila Real de Santo António at the Spanish border. Follow the Guadiana border river inland before turning west over gentle hills, orange groves, and olive orchards back to Tavira.
Day 8: Departure from Tavira
The tour concludes after breakfast in Tavira. Individual departure or extra nights can be arranged.

Getting to Sagres (Departure Point)
By Plane: Faro Airport (FAO). From Faro Airport, public bus connections to Sagres take approximately 3.5 hours with one transfer in Lagos.
Return Journey
From Tavira, public buses connect back to Faro Airport in approximately 1 hour. Optional private transfers are also available to book.
