Pedraza – Segovia 52 km / 32 miles
Leave Pedraza through the quiet back roads along the Guadarrama mountain range. The great republican poet Antonio Machado described the area (Castilla) as “an endless Ocean of stone”. Entering Segovia under the grand Roman aqueduct (the best preserved in the world) your centrally located hotel puts you in short walking distance to the cathedral, Alcazar (fortress) and you are in the charming old part of the town. Segovia belongs to the first cities in Europe taken into UNESCO heritage.
You may cycle to the royal palace of La Granja and back on bike lanes (20km all in all) and, then, spend the rest of your day exploring Segovia itself. Isabel la Católica was crowned as queen of Castille in its Cathedral. For long the magical Alcazar was a Muslim fortress. You will find a stunningly beautiful view of it from down under by riding with you bikes along the two streams Clamores and Eresma.
A visit to the nearby royal palace at La Granja with it’s beautiful baroque gardens, is absolutely worth it! The palace was the royal residence of the first King of the Bourbon dynasty, Felipe V. Born in Versailles, he build him self a palace to resemble the grandness of the court of his grandfather the Sun King Louis XIV. Also interesting to visit is the the royal tapestry collection and the museum for glass and crystal work (glass blowing) from the 18th century, still manufacturing crystal glass for chandeliers, vases and more.
Your luggage may stay at the hotel mean while you take your last ride around Segovia, the surrounding Romanesque and baroque monasteries, the first industrial coin factory in the world and the palace of La Granja.
We will book your train tickets back to Madrid for the evening. You will leave the bike at the hotel at and arranged time. Pick up your luggage and a taxi will transfer you to the train station.
The train ride to Madrid takes about half an hour (arrival at Chamartín Station).
