Apulia bike tour: The heel of Italy
As you look at the map of Italy, with its resemblance to a boot, the south-eastern extreme, known as Apulia (Puglia in Italian), forms the heel. This peninsula, closed in by the Adriatic and Ionic seas, is a region abundant in vineyards, olive groves, and extensive wheat fields, as well as offering beautiful countryside, and untouched by mass tourism, is ideal for this cycle tour, which allows you to experience to the full the charm of a fascinating and ancient culture

Our route passes mainly through the lowlands, with some hilly terrain. Only during the height of the holiday season would you encounter traffic along these roads, which are otherwise virtually deserted. Traffic is almost non-existent in the region except during the high tourist season. The route incorporates some delightful stretches along the beautiful Apulian coast.

Bike itinerary self-guided cycle route
Day 1: Alberobello – Individual arrival
Alberobello is unique: it is the only urban settlement of the so-called trulli (cone-shaped buildings) in the world. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1996.
Day 2: Alberobello – Ostuni – 45 km / 28 miles
You will cycle through the countryside to Ostuni, renowned as an architectural jewel, often referred to as «the white town» for its white walls and typically white-painted architecture.
Day 3: Alberobello – Manduria area – 60 km / 36 miles
Today you will leave Ostuni and the Murge hills behind you and will start cycling on the Salento plain, characterized by green and red colours, given by its olive trees and red soil. Along the way, you will have the chance to visit Oria with its beautiful historical centre and the castle built by Emperor Federico II. Today’s destination is the Manduria area, the capital of the Primitivo grapes.
Day 4: Manduria area – Gallipoli – 70 km / 44 miles
From now on, you will head towards the seaside, which will accompany your bike tour between ancient coastal towers and the beach. Once you reach Porto Cesareo, we suggest you enjoy a fish-based lunch. Further pedaling south, your destination will be the Greek Kale Polis, today Gallipoli, with one of the most beautiful historic centres of the Salento region. Later, enjoy a stroll in its streets and the views of the sea that surrounds it.
Day 5: Gallipoli-Santa Maria di Leuca – 50 km / 31 miles
As we continue by bike along the coast, we reach Santa Maria di Leuca, a town named after sailors from ancient Greece. They saw this place so well endowed with sunlight and therefore called it leukos, which means white. The town is now a famous seaside resort and a fishing area.
Day 6: Santa Maria di Leuca – Otranto – 50 km / 31 miles
Today´s cycling route heads northwards along the Adriatic coast to Otranto, the easternmost point of Italy. Here, visits to the beautiful cathedral and a fine Aragonese Castle are essential.
Day 7: Otranto-Lecce – 55 km / 33 miles
Cycling by the Alimini Lakes and their unique Mediterranean bushes, we enter the city of Lecce. Thanks to a heavy baroque influence in the city’s architecture, it has earned the nickname of “Florence of the South”. Do take note of the rich, sculpted 17th-century motifs carved from Lecce’s soft stone. The remains of the ancient walls enclosing the old town bear witness to the exuberant periods in years gone by.
Day 8: Lecce – End of self-guided bike tour or extension
Individual departure after breakfast.

Apulia en bici autoguiado: El Talón de Italia
Apulia es una región en el sureste de Italia, que incluye la parte del talón de la bota de Italia. Está bordeada por el Mar Adriático en el este y el Mar Jónico al sureste. La región se caracteriza por sus olivares interminables, largos campos de cereales y viñedos. El encanto de esta ruta es el de llevarle a uno a través de una región de belleza escénica que para los estándares de hoy en día todavía se presenta virgen por los aspectos poco conocidos de turismo y todavía conserva el testimonio de su gran y antigua cultura.

El tráfico es casi inexistente en Abulia con la excepción de la temporada alta de vacaciones. La ruta incluye hermosas extensiones por la costa.

Día 1: Alberobello – Llegada individual
Llegada individual. Durante milenios, los habitantes de esta región han tallado viviendas directamente en los barrancos y cárcavas hechas de toba, una característica piedra blanda de color de miel. Estas casas son llamadas » Sassi » y son hoy Patrimonio de la Humanidad.
Día 2: Alberobello – Ostuni 45 km
Hoy la ruta en bici pasará por los famosos trulli de Alberobello y Locorotondo. Los trulli suelen ser viviendas o almacenes. Alberobello se encuentra sobre dos colinas, separadas por un río. En la colina del este se asienta la ciudad nueva con características arquitectónicas modernas. En la colina occidental, los trulli se alinean en un conglomerado urbano subdividido en dos distritos: Monti y Aia Piccola, ambos declarados monumentos nacionales a partir de 1930 y hoy también Patrimonio de la Humanidad.
Día 3: Ostuni – Manduria 60 km
Hoy partiremos en bici por el campo de Ostuni, que tiene fama de joya arquitectónica y comúnmente se conoce como » la Ciudad Blanca» por sus paredes blancas y su arquitectura típicamente pintada de blanco.
Día 4: Manduria – Gallipoli, 70 km
Después del desayuno, viajé en tren hasta la ciudad de Lecce. En unos pocos kilómetros travesaremos en bici esta ciudad increíblemente rica en estilo barroco. Luego nos adentraremos en el campo salentiniano, acercándonos a la costa jónica, y su destino final para hoy será la ciudad de Gallipoli.
Día 5: Gallipoli – Santa Maria di Leuda – 50 km
Después del desayuno pedalearemos a lo largo de la costa hasta llegar a Santa Maria di Leuca. Este nombre fue dado por los antiguos marineros griegos que vinieron de Oriente. Vieron este lugar iluminado por el sol, por lo que lo llamaron » leukos «, que significa «blanco». Santa Maria di Leuca es un famoso balneario y una zona importante de pesca.
Día 6: Santa Maria di Leuca, Otranto – 50 km
Hoy saldremos en bici hacia el norte, a lo largo de la costa adriática, hasta Otranto, el punto más oriental de Italia, donde se puede visitar la hermosa catedral y el gran castillo aragonés construido por Fernando I.
Día 7: Otranto – Leche – 55 km
Pedalearemos por los lagos de Alimini y gozaremos de su única vegetación mediterránea hasta entrar en Lecce. Gracias a su estilo barroco, esta ciudad se ha ganado el apodo de Florencia del Sur, donde podrá apreciar los ricos motivos esculpidos en el siglo diecisiete con la piedra local de Lecce. El casco antiguo, rodeado por las antiguas murallas, le dejará la impresión de un período exuberante.
Día 8: Lecce – Fin del tour en bici autoguiado
