Detailed Tour Route
As the oldest, most celebrated, and most frequented route in Spain, it’s no wonder the Camino de Santiago is considered a UNESCO World Heritage Route. The various paths traverse many regions of northern Spain, including Navarra, La Rioja, Castilla y León, and Galicia. Some routes extend along the northern coast, through País Vasco, Cantabria, and Asturias. Every stage offers breathtaking landscapes, from the vineyards of La Rioja to the lush, green mountains further west.

At each stage of the route, you’ll enjoy a new gastronomic experience, with each region offering its own unique cuisine. Accommodation is carefully selected, and you can choose the hotel category that best suits your preferences, combining comfort with local charm. All the tips for food and wine are included in our Bravo Bike Camino de Santiago guide.
Itinerary (7 days)
They say that your pilgrimage starts the moment you leave your home. This tour chooses León as the starting point, a city northwest of Madrid – two hours by high-speed train or 4 hours by bus. Once the capital of a vast Kingdom that stretched all the way to Galicia in northern Portugal, León’s cathedral is an exquisite example of Gothic architecture.
A city with abundant architectural richness, and a multitude of typical bars. We can recommend places for drinks before dinner. Don’t miss León Cathedral, a Gothic gem with splendid stained glass windows. On arrival in León, we collect our Pilgrim’s Passports which will be stamped at many different places along the Way, proving that bikers have completed over 200 km to Santiago.
51 km (32 miles) | 243 m (797 ft)
A hearty buffet breakfast starts every day’s cycling. Our route takes us through the changing Castilian landscapes – abundant with crops, wheat, corn, hops, and even vineyards. We arrive at Astorga, a city with Roman origins and home to an Episcopal Palace designed by Antoni Gaudí – today serving as a museum of the Camino de Santiago.
75 km (47 miles) | 802 m (2631 ft)
Starting with a gentle climb, our Camino gradually steepens until reaching the Cruz de Ferro (Iron Cross) – pilgrims like to leave a commemorative stone here below the cross. There follows a long downhill ride with superb views, passing the villages of Acebo and Molinaseca and entering the wine region of El Bierzo, to finally reach Villafranca del Bierzo, a town important to pilgrims as a refuge and sanctuary prior to the most difficult part of their journey.
68 km (43 miles) | 1237 m (4058 ft)
The ride uphill from Villafranca to the mountain village of O Cebreiro, marking our entry into Galicia, is perhaps the most demanding part of the route. From there, it’s all downhill to the town of Sarria.
70 km (44 miles) | 1173 m (3849 ft)
Today’s cycling takes us through picturesque countryside, passing through the small town of Portomarin, originally submerged by the River Miño dam and rebuilt on a hill overlooking the reservoir. Several easy climbs and descents across the rolling Galician terrain bring us to Arzúa, famous for its creamy cheese.
47 km (29 miles) | 511 m (1677 ft)
This final day of our pilgrimage is short but challenging – around four hours of cycling ending in Santiago at the Pórtico de la Gloria (Façade of Glory) by the cathedral, an unforgettable view. We proceed to the Pilgrim’s Office to collect your official certificate confirming the completion of the pilgrimage.
Santiago de Compostela is one of the three most important pilgrimage cities, alongside Jerusalem and Rome, and still attracts pilgrims worldwide. Adjacent to the cathedral, in Obradoiro Plaza, is the final meeting point of all roads that lead to Santiago. Drop off your bike at your hotel, centrally located, giving you the opportunity to explore the streets and bars of the historic centre after some rest.
73 km (45 miles) | 960 m (2800 ft)
Return to Madrid or extend your trip in Spain or Portugal. The high-speed train from Santiago to Madrid takes about 5 hours, the bus 8–10 hours, or flying around 1 hour.
If you return to Madrid, you can join our city tours and/or explore the beautiful landscapes surrounding Madrid on our day trips by bike.
Getting to León (Starting Point)
Your trip begins in León, northwest Spain.
The most convenient airports are Madrid (MAD) and Asturias (OVD). Bilbao (BIO) is also an option, though travel takes longer.
