Itinerary of the self guided bicycle tour

Day 1: Ljubljana – Individual arrival

Visit the historic old town, take a ride up to the mighty Ljubljana Castle, perched high on a hill overlooking the centre. As the sun goes down you can relax with a meal and drinks in one of the many riverside restaurants, or at Nebotičnik, the highest building in Ljubljana and offering a panoramic view of the city.

Day 2: Ljubljana – Vrhnika – 39 km / 24 miles or 57 km / 36 miles  (including side trip)

Today you cycle across an immense 160-square kilometer marshy plain. The Ljubljansko Barje was once a great lake until it dried up 6000 years ago, leaving behind an incredibly diverse landscape that is now home to some of Europe’s rarest forms of bird, plant and insect life. Along the way you can visit the remnants of the world’s highest railway viaduct in Borovnica. Overnight in a 4-star hotel.

Day 3: Vrhnika – Postojna – 32 km / 20 miles or 44 km / 25 miles (including a side trip)

Today you will experience the beauty of the Slovenian karst countryside as you cycle past the beautiful Slivnica Mountain and the magical disappearing lakes of Cerknica and Planina, and marvel at the wonders of this vast world of limestone. You can have a picnic in the Rakov Škocjan nature reserve, where the Rak River has carved out a stunning gorge containing two natural bridges. Overnight in a 3-star hotel.

Day 4: Postojna – Štanjel area – 40 km / 25 miles

In the town of Postojna you can visit the beautiful underground Postojna caves and are whisked into a world of limestone caverns and giant stalagtites and stalagmites. You can also visit the impenetrable fortress of Predjama castle and learn about Erasmus, who kept a whole army at bay by utilizing the secret of the Predjama Caves. Learn how Erasmus met his untimely demise in less than poetic circumstances, as he was literally caught with his pants down.

Day 5: Štanjel area – Lipica – Divaca – 48 km / 30 miles

First you stop at the lovely botanical garden in Sežana, then it’s on to the stud farm of Lipica, where you can visit these beautiful thoroughbred Lipizaner horses, whose glistening white coats and gentle, graceful dancing have earned them a worldwide reputation. Take a tour in a traditional carriage, and visit them close up in their stables. You can also visit the unusual but very interesting “War Museum” set in a lovely Venetian tower.

Day 6: Divaca – Muggia – 38 km / 24 miles

Initially rolling terrain, then a long downhill. Accommodation in 4* hotel. If you skiped Postojna caves – this morning you can visit Škocjan Caves – no less interesting but way less frequented Karst Caves – even listed as UNESCO natural monument! You can take a diversion into the Italian town of Trieste – once an important port with its worldly flair and wonderful atmosphere. Visit the castle, cathedral and Piazza Unita central square. Trieste was once part of Slovenia whilst under the rule of the Austrian monarchy. Relax with a cappuccino in the many old-fashioned cafes. The daytrip ends in Muggia – south of Trieste. After days’cycling it is time to enjoy a gelato in old center of town or relax on one of beaches.

Day 7: Muggia – Piran – 37 km / 23 miles

Cycling along the coastal road on new cycling path following former railway line. Enjoy great vistas of Slovenian coast and Trieste Bay. A coffee stop in fashionable resort of Portorož is a must. The trip ends in the gorgeous little Venetian harbor village of Piran.

Day 8: Piran – End of self-guided tour or extension

An easy return trip is possible by train to Ljubljana. Additional nights may be booked in Koper.

Día 1: Llegada individual a Liubliana

La capital de Slovenia nos ofrece un entorno de “fin de siglo” con bonitas mansiones y un espectacular castillo que mira orgulloso la ciudad. Pueden tomar una bebida relajante en las riberas del río Ljublijanica y pasear por esta bonita ciudad. (Hotel 3*).

Día 2: Liubljana – Vrhnika – 57 km

Se pedaleará a través de la llanura de Ljubljansko Barje, un área antes de marismas, que rodea la ciudad. (Hotel 4*). Se puede hacer un pequeño paseo hasta la garganta de Vintgar (reserva natural), ver los restos del que fue el viaducto para trenes más alto del mundo en Borovnica, el Museo Técnico de la República de Slovenia en el que se encuentra una gran colección de los coches que pertenecieron a Tito.

Día 3: Vrhnika – Postojna – 44 km

Hoy, el día tendrá alguna subida en carreteras secundarias de bosques, habrá algunas secciones de llanura por Carst (Hotel 3*). Se verá un panorama típico esloveno, sin turismo. Aconsejamos hacer un pic-nic en la Reserva Natural de Harkov Skocjan rodeados por un precioso panorama de formas caprichosas.

Día 4: Postojna – Stanjel – 45 km

La ruta de hoy es fácil con una larga bajada y unas pequeñas colinas que subir. (Hotel rural 2*). Recomendamos ver las cuevas Postojna, sin duda una atracción mundial.Más de 30 millones de personas las han visitado hasta ahora. Hay unas preciosas formaciones calizas sin olvidar el único¡“pez humano”! Se puede visitar el castillo Predjama envuelto en una preciosa historia romántica, que podrá descubrir.

Día 5: Kodreti/Stanjel – Lipica – Divaca – 48 km

La primera parada será en el precioso jardín botánico en Sežana, luego visitará la caballeriza en la granja de Lipica, donde podrá observar y ver estos hermosos caballos de pura sangre llamados LIPIZANER que con sus danzas y movimientos graciosas han ganado una espectacular reputación en todo el mundo. Le recomendamos que haga un recorrido en un carruaje tradicional, luego les puede ver de cerca en sus establos. Otra opción interesante será la visita del museo de la Guerra, ambientado en una encantadora torre veneciana.

Día 6: Divaca – Muggia – 38 km

Inicialmente terreno ondulado, luego un largo descenso. Alojamiento en hotel de 4 *. Si usted saltó cuevas de Postojna – esta mañana se puede visitar Cuevas Škocjan – no menos interesante pero mucho menos frecuentado Cuevas Karst – incluso en la lista como monumento natural de la UNESCO! Usted puede tomar un desvío en la ciudad italiana de Trieste – una vez un puerto importante con su estilo mundano y maravilloso ambiente. Visite el castillo, la catedral y la Piazza Unita. Trieste fue una vez parte de Eslovenia, mientras que bajo el gobierno de la monarquía austriaca. Relájese con un capuchino en los muchos cafés de moda. La excursión termina en Muggia – al sur de Trieste. Después de days’cycling es el momento de disfrutar de un gelato en el centro antiguo de la ciudad o relajarse en una de las playas.

Día 7: Muggia – Piran – 37 km

Ciclismo a lo largo de la carretera costera en el nuevo camino de ciclismo siguiendo la antigua línea de ferrocarril. Disfrute de las maravillosas vistas de la costa eslovena
y la bahía de Trieste. Una parada de café en la estación de moda de Portorož es una necesidad. El viaje termina en el magnífico Venetian pequeño pueblo portuario de Piran.

Día 8: Piran – Fin del viaje o posible extensión

Viaje agradable en tren para llegar a Ljubljana. Hay posibilidad de reservar una noche adicional en Koper.
