We offer you 6 different one-day excursions. The routes have been chosen for experienced bikers who like a challenge for long up hills, off-road, dirt paths and longer distances with breathtaking descents. They are combined with superb landscapes, a wealth of historic sites and towns. Finally you will enjoy the intensive life of Madrid. At the foot of the Sierra de Guadarrama there is a small village with a very stingy name: Blackberry bush means Zarzalejo in Spanish language. It lays on the slopes of two small mountains, with the unique name of The He-Women (Las Machotas) at only three quarters of and hour from Madrid. The difficulty to pronounce its name, does not match with the beauty of its surroundings and with the peace and quiet one experiments there. The village is composed of: the upper and lower Zarzalejo, its upper part dates back to the XV century.
We meet at our Bravo Bike shop in Madrid centre, Calle Juan Alvarez Mendizabal, 19, Metro Plaza de Espana. We inform you about the details of the trip, we distribute the bikes and everything you need for the week. From there, we catch a train to the outskirts of Madrid to avoid the metropolitan hustle and bustle. We start cycling from the train station up a slight assent to San Lorenzo de El Escorial, where we can stop and visit the Monastery, built under the reign of Felipe II. With Madrid in the distance and a great view from the top of the mountains we cycle on to spend the night in Zarzalejo, a tranquil rural village.
We are in the Sierra de Guadarrama mountain range and we climbing through many of Hollywood’s picturesque film sets of the past. We enjoy the first panoramic views of Castilla y León and its national parks. Crossing Puerto del León with Madrid far behind us we spend the night in Cercedilla, one of the prettiest and most peaceful villages in this mountain range.
Mainly on nature trails we cross the mountains to enter the province of Castile and descend through the forests of Valsaín and stop at the palace of La Granja and a chance to visit its amazing gardens, before continuing on to Segovia.
Sorry but “That Castilla is flat” is a myth and we cross the undulating barren landscape that look like burnt earth and vultures overhead before the shade of the trees return. Entering the medieval city or Pedraza through its fortified door that reigns high above its surroundings.
We return to the province of Madrid, via Navafría taking in some breath-taking views of Lozoya Valley. From the peak we can choose asphalt or the bucolic forest track that passes streams and waterfalls. In Rascafría you can visit the Paular Monastery.
Still in the mountains so we have another pass to climb and more mountains to enjoy, the Puerto de la Morcuera. In Manzanares el Real we will see its medieval castle, one of the best preserved in Spain.
In Collado Villalba we can catch the train back to Bravo Bike´s office in Madrid or via the reservoir at the foot of the Castle of Manzanares el Real to return to Madrid by bike using a bike path. This would add 34 km to the route.
